The Court of Star Chamber

This Court, so-called due to the star pattern on the ceiling of the chamber at Westminster Palace, evolved from the kings Council in its function of hearing subjects' petitions.  This Court was brought to prominence by Henry VII and subsequently Wolsey and Cromwell encouraged plaintiffs to bring their grievances before it. Its unpopularity arose from its extensive use by Charles 1st during his years of rule without Parliament and it was abolished by the "Long Parliament" (1640 to 1660).
