Dewey & Ballard

In 1917 Sir Thomas Charles Dewey, Bart., of South Hill Wood, Bromley, co. Kent, applied for a Grant of Arms for his mother's family of Ballard, to be used as a quartering with his own. She was Caroline, daughter and eventual heir of Thomas Ballard late of High Halden, co. Kent.

A pedigree was entered of both Dewey and Ballard, the latter begins with Thomas and Mary Ballard of Tenterden, who had at least three sons, (1) Thomas of Tenterden and High Halden (d. 1790), who had two wives but no issue is indicated, George, of whom nothing is said, and (3) William, who had six sons, John Ballard of Grosvenor Square, London and of Tenterden (through whom the pedigree continues); (2) William; (3) George, died 1789, issue mark; and (4,5 & 6) Benjamin, Thomas and Samuel.'' The following pedigree is actually mine and I have tentatively linked Thomas Ballard into my tree for two reasons, one is that it is a "fair working hypothesis" and the other is that I can remember where he is in my 10,000 person database! The branch is largely constructed from the evidence contained in the will of Thomas Ballard of Tenterden and High Halden (d. 1790) which contains no less than 29 explicitly named relatives with their relationship to the testator.

The arms are, quarterly 1st and 4th, per fesse sable and or three cinquefoils within two barrulets between three dragon's heads erased countercharged, in each of their mouths a sword in band proper pommel and hilt of the second (DEWEY): 2nd and 3rd, sable a griffin segreant ermine, armed or, the wings erminois, a bordure compony argent and gules (BALLARD).
