`On 1 January 1557, already existing Arms were confirmed, and the Grant of a Crest made to John Ballard of Much Dewchurch (Great Dewchurch), co. Hereford: Sable a Griffin passant Ermine ducally gorged Or. Crest: A demi griffin Ermine supporting with the claws part of a broken tilting spear proper.

Known descendants survive from this family that dates back to William Ballard, MP for Hereford in 1327/31 and includes William Ballard, March King of Arms.
